SplashID is reviewed by www.knowyourmobile.com

SplashID always makes news and is an incredible application. Oh I may be biased to it, cos I work for SplashData, but Simon Bisson does not. Look at what he had to say:

"SplashID is a surprisingly useful tool. It’s easy to use, and keeps your passwords and secret information where you’re not likely to lose them.

Keeping them on a secure Blackberry and backing up to a PC makes a lot of sense, especially when you can remotely wipe any lost devices, making sure no one gets their hands on your digital identity."

Not to mention we also have USB sync (not just WiFi) between the desktop and the device.

An overall rating of 4 stars is good, not good enough for us tho'! But ... we will be happy with that for now! :)

Most commonly used passwords

Imperva's Application Defense Center (ADC) analyzed the strength of the passwords in a report, Consumer Password Worst Practices, that analyzes 32 million passwords to help consumers and website administrators identify the most commonly used passwords they should avoid when using social networking or e-commerce sites.

A report identifies the most commonly used passwords:
  1. 123456
  2. 12345
  3. 123456789
  4. Password
  5. iloveyou
  6. princess
  7. rockyou
  8. 1234567
  9. 12345678
  10. abc123
Some key findings of the study include:
  • The shortness and simplicity of passwords means many users select credentials that will make them susceptible to basic forms of cyber attacks known as "brute force attacks."
  • Nearly 50% of users used names, slang words, dictionary words or trivial passwords (consecutive digits, adjacent keyboard keys, and so on). The most common password is "123456".
  • Recommendations for users and administrators for choosing strong passwords.

Beware of the new Facebook password reset scam

A month or so ago, I received this email:

The attachment contains a password stealer that targets Windows computers and which can potentially access any username and password combination used on the computer, not just the login credentials for Facebook.

"This threat is potentially very dangerous considering that there are over 350 million Facebook users who could fall for this scam," McAfee says.

There are obvious clues that this is a phishing scam. For one, Facebook doesn't send e-mails like this. It may send an e-mail with a link where the user can reset the password, but not an e-mail with an attachment. Secondly, the e-mail has poor grammar and awkward phrases. For instance, Facebook is not capitalized in the salutation.

If you get an e-mail that appears to be from Facebook saying the company reset your password and urging you to open an attachment, it is a scam. Repeat, it is a scam.

iPhone SMS database hacked in 20 seconds

EVERYBODY PANIC! A new threat has been found in Safari, allowing hackers to rip the entire catalog of text messages (received and sent, deleted or not) from your iPhone for their perusal and personal privacy perversions. You load the malicious website, and it goes to work, no user interaction required.

NOBODY PANIC! Fortunately for us, it was discovered by two gents Vincenzo Iozzo and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, security researchers performing for the 2010 Pwn20wn hacking contest, and their $15,000 first prize ensures that the winning formula will go to Apple (and only Apple) for further study. Thank God for the good guys.

While Google doesn’t publicly show how many applications there are in Android Market, a Google representative this morning informed that the application store now serves approximately 30,000 free and paid apps in total... according to Robin Wauters. Read More

When will we see iPhone 4.0?

Apple has set the standard that once every year they will release a new version of the iPhone. It stands to reason that this year will be no different, with a new model likely coming sometime this summer. And that’s why it shouldn’t be surprising at all that whispers of iPhone OS 4.0 are starting to grow. But this year, the timeline appears a bit off. As Apple Insider reported today that iPhone OS 4.0 is likely to deliver multitasking support. If true, that will make it perhaps the most important OS upgrade for the platform yet.

Is it possible that some of the speculation about the new iPhone OS release has been muted because of the recent iPad unveiling and its upcoming launch on April 3rd?

It seems unlikely that Apple would launch a new iPhone OS without giving developers plenty of time to play around with it. And since there is no word about the 4.0 SDK coming anytime soon, that could well mean a push from the usual June/July timeframe for a new (final build) iPhone OS launch. Might we see new iPhone hardware that launches with OS 3.2? And then iPhone OS 4.0 would be released as a free upgrade closer to the Fall timeframe? It certainly seems possible!!

(Thanks to MG Siegler for the info)
