<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
LOS GATOS, CA – SplashData has announced its annual list of the 25 most common passwords found on the Internet. For the first time since SplashData began compiling its annual list, "password" has lost its title as the most common and therefore Worst Password, and two-time runner-up "123456" took the dubious honor. "Password" fell to #2.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
According to SplashData, this year's list was influenced by the large number of passwords from Adobe users posted online by security consulting firm Stricture Consulting Group following Adobe's well publicized security breach.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
"Seeing passwords like 'adobe123' and 'photoshop' on this list offers a good reminder not to base your password on the name of the website or application you are accessing," says Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
SplashData's list of frequently used passwords shows that many people continue to put themselves at risk by using weak, easily guessable passwords. Some other passwords in the Top Ten include "qwerty," "abc123," "111111," and "iloveyou."</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
"Another interesting aspect of this year's list is that more short numerical passwords showed up even though websites are starting to enforce stronger password policies," Slain said. For example, new to this year's list are simple and easily guessable passwords like "1234" at #16, "12345" at #20, and "000000" at #25.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
SplashData, provider of the SplashID Safe line of password management applications, releases its annual list in an effort to encourage the adoption of stronger passwords. "As always, we hope that with more publicity about how risky it is to use weak passwords, more people will start taking simple steps to protect themselves by using stronger passwords and using different passwords for different websites."</div>

SplashData suggests making passwords more secure with these tips:</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters. But even passwords with common substitutions like "dr4mat1c" can be vulnerable to attackers' increasingly sophisticated technology, and random combinations like "j%7K&yPx$" can be difficult to remember. One way to create more secure passwords that are easy to recall is to use passphrases -- short words with spaces or other characters separating them. It's best to use random words rather than common phrases. For example, "cakes years birthday" or "smiles_light_skip?"</div>
<div class="p1">
<br />
Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites. Especially risky is using the same password for entertainment sites that you do for online email, social networking, or financial service sites. Use different passwords for each new website or service you sign up for.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
Having trouble remembering all those different strong passwords? Try using a password manager application that organizes and protects passwords and can automatically log you into websites. There are numerous applications available, but choose one with a strong track record of reliability and security like SplashID Safe, which has a 10 year history and over 1 million users. <a href="https://splashid.com/">SplashID Safe</a> has versions available for Windows and Mac as well as smartphones and tablet devices.</div>

<br />
<div class="p1">
For important passwords like bank logins and email accounts, it's a good idea to change them periodically. Ideally you would change them every 3 months, but that can be inconvenient, so January is a good time to browse through your SplashID Safe database and pick out a few high security records to edit. </div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
We've talked about it before, but here a some pointers on making good passwords:</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
- use a combination of letters and numbers and at least one uppercase character </div>
<div class="p1">
- use different passwords for different sites</div>
<div class="p1">
- stay away from the easily guessed passwords like Jen123</div>
<div class="p1">
- since you're using SplashID already, try to use the password generator to get truly random passwords</div>

You might have some SplashID records that you want on your desktop only and you do not want to have on your device.<br />
<br />
To do this, you can create an extra user in SplashID > User menu > Edit Users.<br />
<br />
The User name has to be in email format but does not have to be a valid email address. You could use test@test.com.<br />
<br />
Then you can put any record under this user that you do not want synced over to your device(s).</div>

I like to keep track of the gifts I purchase my friends for the holidays. I keep a history over the years and I do this in a SplashShopper list.<br />
<br />
For this holiday list I use Recipient for Custom field 1 and I use category as the year that I purchased the particular gift. I keep track of the price and the store where I purchased.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.splashdata.com/splashmoney/">SplashMoney</a> allows you to view reports comparing budgeted amounts to actual amounts. This could be useful right now in setting a holiday gift shopping budget.<br />
<br />
Click the Budget tab to open the Budget View. The default Budget shows spending by Category for the current month. You can create budgets for each Category, Class and Payee.<br />
<br />
<b>Define Budget</b><br />
In the left pane, you can specify the Budget type (Payee, Category or Class), and the time period.<br />
<br />
<b>Budget Amount</b><br />
You specify the budget amount for each item (Category, Class or Payee) by clicking on the Budget Amount in the Budget column. This will open the Budget Amount dialog where you specify a monthly budget amount for that item.<br />
<br />
Note: You may only specify a monthly budget amount for each item. When you are viewing a budget report for a time period of a Quarter, the monthly amount will be multiplied by three, and when viewing by a time period of a Year, the monthly amount will be multiplied by 12.<br />

1. You can copy and paste a record from one SplashShopper list to another. You can select multiple records to copy and paste:<br />
• On Windows, hold down the ctrl key and then click on each record you want to copy.<br />
• On Mac, hold down the command key and then click on each record you want to copy.<br />
<br />
2. You can Export records to a vShop file and Import this vShop file into another list.<br />
• If the list is in the All view, all records will be exported to the vShop file.<br />
• If the list is in Need view, only the records shown in this view will be exported to the vShop file.<br />

Create good ones.<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<br />
In the spirit of Halloween, we wanted to share some tips on creating strong passwords that won't be easily hacked by the Boogeyman.<br />
<br />
1. Don't use a password on our Worst Passwords of 2012 list: <a href="http://splashdata.com/press/PR121023.htm">http://splashdata.com/press/PR121023.htm</a><br />
<br />
2. Don't put your passwords in a Word document or a sticky note. Use a password manager, like SplashID Safe. Even if you don't use SplashID, use one of our competitors. Keep sensitive data encrypted.<br />
<br />
3. Don't use the same password for every site. Especially when it comes to the most sensitive sites - your bank, your email, your facebook, etc - use a unique password for each and don't use those unique passwords anywhere else. That way, if one of your sites gets hacked, your vulnerability is limited, and you only have to change one password, not all of them.<br />
<br />
4. Use a password generator, like the one found in the SplashID Safe edit record screen. You can specify length, strength, complexity, case, etc, to create passwords that are unguessable and impossible to hack.<br />
<br />
5. Don't share passwords over weak channels like email, text, voicemail. It is sometimes necessary to share a login with a colleague or loved one. Resist the easy path of putting it in an email. That leaves a long-lasting plain text copy of it in a very low security zone, and more than likely sitting on a server somewhere for a long time. SplashID can send encrypted files to be imported, or just pick up the phone and say it. Just make sure the recipient of your sensitive data also follows these tips.<br />

<b>In a year loaded with password breaches – Yahoo!, LinkedIn, eHarmony and Last.fm, among others – SplashData Reveals Its Annual "25 Worst Passwords of the Year" List</b></div>

LOS GATOS, CA -- Just in time for Halloween comes something that might scare anyone who spends a lot of time online: <a href="http://splashdata.com/">SplashData's</a> annual list of the most common passwords used on the Internet and posted by hackers. In a year with several high profile password hacking incidents at major sites including Yahoo, LinkedIn, eHarmony, and Last.fm, SplashData's list of frequently used passwords shows that many people continue to put themselves at risk by using weak, easily guessable passwords.</div>

<div class="p2">
"At this time of year, people enjoy focusing on scary costumes, movies and decorations, but those who have been through it can tell you how terrifying it is to have your identity stolen because of a hacked password,” said Morgan Slain, SplashData CEO. “We're hoping that with more publicity about how risky it is to use weak passwords, more people will start taking simple steps to protect themselves by using stronger passwords and using different passwords for different websites."</div>

“Even though each year hacking tools get more sophisticated, thieves still tend to prefer easy targets,” Slain said. “Just a little bit more effort in choosing better passwords will go a long way toward making you safer online.”</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p2">
SplashData suggests making passwords more secure with these tips:</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p2">
Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters. One way to create longer, more secure passwords that are easy to remember is to use short words with spaces or other characters separating them. For example, “eat cake at 8!” or “car_park_city?”</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p2">
Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites. Especially risky is using the same password for entertainment sites that you do for online email, social networking, and financial services. Use different passwords for each new website or service you sign up for.</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p2">
Having trouble remembering all those different passwords? Try using a password manager application that organizes and protects passwords and can automatically log you into websites. There are numerous applications available, but choose one with a strong track record of reliability and security like SplashID Safe, which has a 10 year history and over 1 million users. SplashID Safe has versions available for Windows and Mac as well as smartphones and tablet devices.</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p2">
“It just takes a few extra moments to make a password better,” Slain said. “If you get started now and make it a resolution to keep it up, your life online will be safer and more secure in 2013.”</div>

<b>Tip of the Week: Good PINs and Bad PINs</b><br /><br />A recent article on NBCNews.com discussed findings about the most commonly used PINs. You may recall we published a similar article last year on the most common passwords. Not surprisingly, the most common PIN is the same as the most common password - 1234. Don't use that one. It's used by 11% of users, which means it's the first one an attacker will guess.<br /><br />What's the least common? 8068 according to the report with only 0.0000007% of users choosing it. Now that it's out, an attacker might try it, but it will probably remain relatively uncommon. <br /><br />The most common ones after 1234 usually involve a significant year, so that means anything that starts with 19--. So avoid that. Your birthday might be easily discovered, or your wife's, or your children's, so consider avoiding those. They are popular because they are easy to remember, but perhaps a variation on that theme will do the trick. Like your son's birthday backwards... I'm not telling you mine!<br /><br />http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/whats-safest-4-digit-pin-not-8068-anymore-1B5966082</div>

We have done a preliminary check of our applications on the iPhone 5 simulator and it looks like everything works fine on our applications, including SplashID, SplashMoney and SplashShopper.<br /><br />Like other legacy applications, our user interfaces currently run in a frame the size of the iPhone 4S - 640 x 960 pixels - centered on the screen. This looks fine, but we are already working to enhance our interfaces to take full advantage of the new screen size.<br /><br />Once the updates are available, you'll be able to have a little more room to work with lists in our applications which will be a welcome change we're sure.<br /><br /></div>
