Everyone knows by now, I would think, that you shouldn’t use a password that’s easy to guess. Hackers use automated programs that can find any password if it’s a word in the dictionary or a proper name, even if it’s spelled backwards. Throwing in a mix of letters and numbers helps. But here’s the problem even tricky password users run into: Because we all need passwords for so many Web sites and accounts these days, people end up using the same password for many of them — or else write their passwords down somewhere. Both of these practices are disasters waiting to happen.

I agree with the author on the above, but I suggest truly using a password manager to get your life organized.

Once you set up your accounts and start entering transactions, you'll find that things keep getting easier and easier. Once you've set up a payee or a custom category or a recurring transaction, entries can be completed in just a couple of taps. That streamlined process is much appreciated, especially after seeing how convoluted that process can become in some other finance apps.
I also appreciate SplashMoney's ability to create custom reports by category, for a certain time period, for multiple accounts or for just one. There is also a desktop companion application available as a separate purchase, if you would like the flexibility of being able to manage your money on your iPad and your desktop. FaceTime beta endangers your Apple ID password and security questions

Worried about local hackers? Like leaving your laptop behind in the coffee shop while you take long, leisurely trips to the bathroom? We wouldn't be so self-assured. Turns out there's a gaping security hole in the FaceTime beta, which allows anyone with access to your computer to change your password without knowing it to begin with, as well as peep and edit your security questions and answers. It would be nice if signing out of FaceTime would protect you, but unfortunately the app seems to have a lock-tight memory on your password, so it's easy for anyone to open the app and sign-in again. One, I like the ease of being able to have my grocery list, gift list, etc. on my iPad...our iPad goes a lot of places with us, so it's easy to mark down whatever we need, and know it is stored in a safe place. Not like using sticky notes or whatever paper is laying nearby when you think of an item you need. (Somehow you never can find those lists again when you need them!) Second, and this was a big one...you can put in the amount each item/gift will be, and it gives you the total amount you'll be spending at the bottom. I love that! With this feature, you can know ahead of time what you'll be spending, and not be surprised with how big your total comes up to when you're checking out! Third, I liked that you can put in what store you're planning on purchasing each gift at. Then you go in to that store, pull up "Best-Buy" for example, and see exactly what you need at that store. Five webOS Apps That I Love

We are working on SplashID sync with the cloud for WebOS platform. SplashID on WebOS already has the backup feature to desktop, although it is not as efficient as Syncing, it gives you the opportunity to have a backup for the moment.

We are glad however, that SplashID is one of your top 5 apps.

How not to choose a password

People make some very common mistakes while choosing their passwords and end up with some pretty weak passwords that are easy to hack. Before going any further I think it is important to describe some common mistakes that should be avoided while choosing a password.

Never use your own name (or username) as password.
Name of a relative, friend, pet, actor, or some other name should not be chosen. As, they are easy to guess when a person is going for a targeted attack.
Don't use the name of your favorite book, movie, play, location, etc. These are the first obvious guess of a hacker when they are trying to break into the account of someone that they know.
Any information that is personally relevant to you is again easy to guess. So, things such as address, SSN (Social Security Number), etc. should never be used.
Any single word in a language is vulnerable even spelled backwards.
An obvious misspelling like, f00tball (where number 0 is replace by letter o) or any similar can be guess specially in dictionary-attacks.
Never write down your password, specially for root accounts.
A name that appears or is near the monitor of the system falls in the category of don't do while selecting a safe password.
Ascending or descending order of numbers are fairly weak.
A string of same characters or characters that appear in the same row of a keyboard should never be user.

I often preach that it doesn’t matter how great a security technology is, if it’s too complex for users (or administrators) to use or manage then they will find ways to circumvent security for their own convenience. Biometrics is often promoted as being convenient and secure since every fingerprint is unique. But are these claims really true?

Here are a few more observations about biometrics.

Single factor authentication is so insecure that it needs to be disregarded on the spot.
Strong passwords are more secure than biometrics.
A hardware token like a smartcard is less expensive and more secure than a biometric+password.

Biometric is a way to authenticate users but it should never be used as the primary way. It is best to add for high security areas after a card and password has been presented. Finally, set up the biometrics to do a one-to-one comparison and not the one-to-many.

The 12-character era of online security is upon us, according to a report published this week by the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The researchers used clusters of graphics cards to crack eight-character passwords in less than two hours.

But when the researchers applied that same processing power to 12-character passwords, they found it would take 17,134 years to make them snap.

"The length of your password in some cases can dictate the vulnerability," said Joshua Davis, a research scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

It's hard to say what will happen in the future, but for now, 12-character passwords should be the standard, said Richard Boyd, a senior research scientist who also worked on the project.

Social networking is a craze for everyone in the country. Twitter has been testing verification on a few selected accounts by asking the user to give a set of email addresses and contact numbers along with the same of others who will be able to verify your information. Once an account is verified, the account is then tagged as “Verified”. Some of the Indian personalities with a verified account include Priyanka Chopra, Genelia Dsouza, Pritish Nandy, Shashi Tharoor, and Lalit Modi, to name a few.

Facebook has nothing of the sort in place, with the only security measure being a warning during sign up which tells users that the site is not responsible for the information they put up on their page (which is OF COURSE read by one and all).

On LinkedIn, a member can flag an account as fake and the site will take appropriate action.

Even politicians are not free from this, with former cabinet minister and BJP MP, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, becoming a victim with a fake Facebook profile created using his name.

9. Why don’t more of you call 888-5-OPTOUT to stop banks from sending you preapproved credit offers? You’re making it way too easy for me.

10. I use your credit cards all the time, and I never get asked for ID. A helpful hint: I’d never use a credit card with a picture on it.

11. I can call the electric company, pose as you, and say, “Hey, I thought I paid this bill. I can’t remember—did I use my Visa or MasterCard? Can you read me back that number?” I have to be in character, but it’s unbelievable what they’ll tell me.

12. Thanks for using your debit card instead of your credit card. Hackers are constantly breaking into retail databases, and debit cards give me direct access to your banking account.

13. Love that new credit card that showed up in your mailbox. If I can’t talk someone at your bank into activating it (and I usually can), I write down the number and put it back. After you’ve activated the card, I start using it.

Use passwords of at least 12 characters to protect against hacking

Brute-force attacks are now much more of a threat to short passwords, given the increasing computational prowess of computers, says research scientists at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. In a nutshell, a password consisting of just seven characters is slated to be "hopelessly inadequate"--even if numbers and non-standard symbols are used. Their recommendation, therefore, is to use passwords of at least 12 characters.

One culprit would be the increasing availability of high-powered graphics processing units (GPU); today's top GPU offers about two teraflops of parallel processing powers. As a comparison, senior research scientist Richard Boyd noted that the world's supercomputer in the year 2000 yielded a computing performance of just slightly more than seven teraflops--and cost $110 million.

Joshua Davis, another research scientist involved in the project noted that length is a major factor to protect against brute force approaches. He said, "A computer keyboard contains 95 characters, and every time you add another character, your protection goes up exponentially, by 95 times."

You’ll be able to switch out of one app – a game, say – to hit a GPS program, but there is no definitive guarantee that you’ll be able to swap back into the game where you left off. 2. Be careful with wallpaper – All you budding iOS interior decorators take note: with great power comes great responsibility. Game Center, like iAds and the iBook reader, is making a lot of poor start-ups tremble in their boots right now.

4. It can be jailbroken – Still not enough for you? Still antsy? Well, you can jailbreak your iPhone runnin iOS 4.0 using RedSn0w. What does that let you do? Not much, but you can add little apps that Apple hasn’t approved. Do not, however, expect to carrier unlock the iPhone 4 when it comes out. This is not yet supported.

5. Visuallly it’s more pleasing, especially with folders and the new sliding windows – Generally, iOS 4.0 is a nice change. Once you run 4.0 on an iPhone and look at something running a 3.x variant, you’ll understand the ginormousness of the change. The iPad, for example, looks like a primitive caveman’s attempt at OS design.

An important point to note: if you have a 3GS, all of the features we mentioned here will work. You don’t absolutely have to upgrade your hardware to iPhone 4 right now to try iOS 4.0. In fact, if you have a 3GS all of these features work fine. Break the cycle. Stop the madness

Once installed you get the usual sample database that you can modify/delete to fit you needs. For each category you have 10 fields that you can edit/use and you can selectively hide/show (Mask/Unmask Fields) any one which adds another level of safety – so you don’t display all you passwords as soon as you open the database

SplashMoney shares the basic set ups with SplashID: encryption, desktop companion (highly recommended), cross platform import/export, different types of views etc…. I need this type of software because I am a contractor and I need to keep track of my income & expenses. This has been a useful companion to my Treo 600/680 and now with the HD2. As stated above if you change platform, you get a discount. I had some difficulties crossing over but SplashData was great to help solve my problems.

This is a heads up for anyone running Windows Mobile 6.5:

A little over a month ago, an xda-developers member reported that his phone was waking up on its own and attempting to dial out international numbers. Soon after, other users started reporting the same thing, and after some investigation, it turned out that a virus was to blame. The virus is particularly alarming because it has the potential to cost the phone owner a lot of money.

The virus comes in the form of the game “3D Anti-Terrorist”. DO NOT INSTALL THIS GAME.

If you have installed the game, or if you have noticed any funky international numbers appearing in your call history, there are instructions to remove the virus available here.

Gmail spam uses fake addresses to spread malware

Gmail spam is on the rise. Spammers are using fake Gmail accounts to clog up inboxes, making "Gmail.com" the most abused domain name, according to Commtouch's quarterly Internet Threats Trend Report, released Wednesday.

Only 1% of spam e-mails sent from Gmail addresses are actually from real Gmail accounts, and "this small percentage is likely to represent a mix of spammers and compromised Gmail accounts," Commtouch says.

Gmail now warns users of suspicious account activit y

Overall, "between 5 to 10% of all spam appears to originate from Gmail accounts," Commtouch says. "Addresses are typically faked in order to fool anti-spam systems and to give the impression of a reputable, genuine source."

Spammers are becoming more skilled at using familiar domain names to fool users, and the trend is not limited to Gmail. "Gmail's message style, as well as those of PayPal and facebook, is frequently used by spammers and phishers as standard templates to prompt action by targets of spam and phishing," Commtouch says.

Throughout the first three months of 2010, 83% of all e-mail traffic was spam, "peaking at nearly 92% near the end of March and bottoming out at 75% at the start of the year." On a daily basis, 305,000 zombie computers - devices taken over by hackers and joined to a botnet - are used to "inflict malicious activity," Commtouch said. Brazil produces the most zombie computers, 14% of the global total.

Not surprisingly, pornographic Web sites are the most likely to be infected with malware. What may be surprising to some Internet users is that porn wasn't the most frequently infected category before last quarter.

"'Pornography' has replaced 'business' as the Web site category most infected with malware," Commtouch said.

Pharmacy spam, advertising Viagra and other types of medications, represented 81% of all spam messages, about the same average as from the previous quarter.

Why are people not concerned about exposing their lives on the Internet? In a way that can put not only themselves but their family and friends in danger.

Some info collected just looking ramdomly for profiles on some social network websites.

Phones, credit card numbers, full address, if they have children, how many are they and their names, where do they study, where do they work, etc.

You can find everything about everyone. They're really not concerned, if someone they don't know is looking at their profile searching for ammunition.

We all read stories about people that met online "friends" and many stories that end very bad.

So, why does this happen?

It's because our society lives to deify celebrities and everybody is triyng desperately to get a space on the moon and they expect that somehow they'll win or become famous or escape reality, using these tools?

Or is it just because they are naive and are not aware of the risks?

What can we do about it?

May be include a basic security concepts as a mandatory school subject.

I would like to hear more initiatives related to prevent people from making internet one man's/woman's wonderland!

Tens of Millions of Mexicans May be Left Phoneless Come Saturday

Around about a year ago, a law was passed in Mexico that would enforce compulsory registration of personal details to a mobile phone account. The idea behind it was to help fight crime (Batman style) by inhibiting the method of delivering ransom and extortion calls. Telcos were given 12 months to collect the personal details of their subscribers.

Come Saturday, that 12 months will be up, and despite radio and television commercials urging mobile phone users to register their name and address via text message, around 30 million lines are still unregistered. There is a push from telcos to have the deadline extended by a further 12 months, but senators have thus far refused requests to do so.

Naturally, this is bad news for both the users who haven’t registered and the telcos. 30 million disconnected subscribers equates to a lotta lost dollars: an estimated $10 million per day for their largest provider, America Movil. Another major player in the Mexican telco market, Telefonica, plans to maintain services despite the authority’s weekend deadline, stating that telecommunications are of public interest, protected by the constitution.

Today Apple is announcing the Developer Preview, which will open up all sorts of new avenues for the iPhone with seven main features with multitasking being the crowd pleaser. iPhone OS 4 is bringing home screen wallpaper, Bluetooth keyboard support, 5x digital zoom, spell check (!!!), iPod out, and more.
